Everybody is talking about the NFL draft. They fail to understand the Chicago Bears are also equipped with over $60 million in salary cap space. Not to mention the ability to open up $20 million more. It would not be shocking if GM Ryan Poles decided to take at least one calculated swing at a big name that could help this team gear up for a playoff push in 2024. The uncertainty is who that could be. Sorting through the names will be difficult since extensions and franchise tags are still to come.

However, notable X account NFL Notifications indicated one name has the Bears’ attention two months before the action begins. That is Christian Wilkins. The Miami Dolphins are in a deep financial hole this off-season at $41 million over the salary cap. Unless they do some incredible gymnastics in the coming weeks, there is no way they will be able to afford to keep him. Expectations are they will either tag and trade him or let him hit the open market. Chicago is prepared to make a push if the latter happens.
The Chicago Bears’ interest in Wilkins is justified.
He has emerged as one of the best interior pass rushers in the NFL this season. In 17 games, he racked up nine sacks and 23 quarterback hits for the Dolphins defense. The guy is also noted for being a team leader as well. This Matt Eberflus defense doesn’t function at its best until it finds a credible interior pass rusher. Justin Jones is a free agent this spring. The Bears may not feel Gervon Dexter is ready to fill that void yet. Signing the 28-year-old Wilkins might give that defensive line the juice they need.
Most of this is predicated on what the Dolphins do. If they’re dead set on getting something for Wilkins via a tag and trade, then don’t expect the Chicago Bears to bite. They already gave up one high pick for a veteran in Montez Sweat. Poles isn’t likely to do it a second time. Still, it is interesting to see things starting to form with the off-season drawing closer. The Bears know this is an important next few months. If they make enough solid moves, they can challenge for the NFC North next season.
