MSM Sports reported on Monday that their client, Josh Harrison, has agreed to a free-agent contract with the Cincinnati Reds. Harrison, who was born in Cincinnati, is returning home.
Harrison, 36, is a two-time MLB All-Star with a lifetime batting average of.270. He has played a variety of positions on the field, but was limited to 40 games for the Philadelphia Phillies last season before getting DFA’d. Harrison finished the season in the minors with the Texas Rangers organization.
Harrison’s contract is an NRI (non-roster invite), which means he will play minor league baseball with an invitation to MLB spring training. The versatile veteran, however, should have an opportunity to contribute in Cincinnati, especially now that one longstanding batter is no longer in the lineup.
Reds Decide To Take A Chance On 2-Time All-Star
They have a group of talented position players with a high ceiling: Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Spencer Steer, Jonathan India, Tyler Stephenson, Noelvi Marte, Will Benson, TJ Friedl, and several others have taken the league by storm in recent seasons, most notably in 2023.
They also have strong pitchers such as Andrew Abbott, Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, and recent additions Nick Martinez and Frankie Montas.
They thought they could use a utilityman, so they took a cheap risk on a former two-time All-Star: Josh Harrison.
“Welcome home, Josh Harrison!” MSM is thrilled to report that our client, Josh Harrison, has signed an NRI contract with the Cincinnati Reds! Josh, a career.270 hitter with over 4,300 MLB PA in 13 seasons and two All-Star Games, is anticipated to play a flexible role around the field and bring senior leadership to a youthful Reds squad!” The MSM agency tweeted.
Josh Harrison had his best seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the early to mid-2010s, before moving on to play for several other MLB teams.
He knows his way around an MLB clubhouse, he can cover numerous spots, and he has experience and the determination to earn his job, given that it is a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
