The Bears have stated that they want a large haul of picks if they decide to move down from the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that Chicago would expect “historic compensation” and a “crazy” number of selections in order to trade down.
So the Bears want the rest of the NFL to know that if any team trades up for USC quarterback Caleb Williams, they will have to give the Bears a lot in exchange.
Last year, the Bears selected wide receiver D.J. Moore with the ninth overall pick, the 61st overall pick, a 2024 first-round pick, and a 2025 second-round pick for the first overall pick. This year
The Bears could decide to stick with Justin Fields as their starting quarterback and use that “historic compensation” to build a team around Fields. But it sounds more likely that they’ll take Williams themselves, barring something historic being sent to Chicago.
Ian Rapoport Reveals Chicago Bears “Crazy” Asking Price For #1 Pick
GM Ryan Poles was almost immediately open to trading the #1 overall pick last year. His path forward seemed obvious at the time. The Chicago Bears wanted to further explore what they had with quarterback Justin Fields. Trading the pick would net them a large haul of draft picks, with which they could continue upgrading a rebuilding roster. The decision looks like a big success. The deal netted them wide receiver D.J. Moore, tackle Darnell Wright, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, the #1 pick in the 2024 draft, and a 2nd in 2025.
One would think Poles might be eager to duplicate the process again this year. After all, Fields did show some improvement down the stretch this season. There are several QB-desperate teams in the top 10. One would think the return for dealing the pick would be huge. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network provided an update on that subject with the Super Bowl almost upon us. From what he’s hearing, the Bears are determined to stay put at #1 this time unless somebody makes an offer they can’t possibly turn down.
