One of Mississippi’s best prospects for 2025 has produced a “top eight” list. Lake Cormorant (Miss.) High School linebacker/safety Jarcoby Hopson tweeted a top eight list of Ole Miss, Texas, LSU, Auburn, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Miami on Saturday.
Hopson is a four-star prospect ranked as the nation’s No. 20 linebacker and the No. 5 player in Magnolia State’s 2025 class by the industry-generated Composite index. He is ranked as the No. 160 overall player in America by the Composite and No. 237 in the Top247.
Maroon 4, Black 0
Hardin and Stevens combine for a two-hit, five-inning shutout, but injuries to Mershon and Dotson grab the headlines.
Mississippi State scrimmaged Saturday morning, hoping to beat the forecasted rain. The regulated game lasted four and a half dry innings and resulted in a 4-0 Maroon triumph. But a pair of injuries, one to shortstop David Mershon and the other to left-handed pitcher Luke Dotson, dimmed the proceedings. The team is slated to scrimmage again on Sunday, but weather could disrupt that plan.
Tyson Hardin started the scrimmage on the hill for Team Maroon. He worked around Jackson McKenzie’s two-out double into the right field corner to put a zero on the scoreboard. Brooks Auger started things for the Black unit. Logan Kohler singled to center with one out, and a two-out walk placed two on base. Bryce Chance singled to center, scoring Kohler for a 1-0 lead, but Hunter Hines was thrown out attempting to go from first to third.
Steven Spalitta started the Black second inning with a hit to center off Hardin. The Blacks were held scoreless after a fielder’s choice out at second, a soft fly out to left, and a punch out. Auger returned to the hill’s lower half. Ross Highfill’s one-out bouncing single to center allowed the Maroons to add on. For the second day in a row, Connor Hujsak homered to left, making the score 3-0. David Mershon followed with a triple into the right field corner, but the speedy middle infielder paused somewhere between second and third, clutching his right hamstring. Jackson Owen hit a single to center, scoring Gabe Larry, who was pinch running for Mershon. An infield error ended the inning.
