New Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith expanded his staff on Friday, appointing Tom Arth as quarterbacks coach, Zach Azzanni as wide receivers coach, and Mateo Kambui as offensive assistant.
Arth takes over for Mike Sullivan, who was the Steelers’ offensive coordinator for the previous three seasons and spent the last weeks of 2023 coordinating the plays after the team fired Matt Canada.
Arth was the Los Angeles Chargers’ passing game coordinator in 2022-23, working closely with quarterback Justin He
rbert. Arth and Smith will spend their first season trying to assist Steelers starter Kenny Pickett improve after a disappointing 2023 in which he threw only six touchdowns in 12 games. Arth formerly served as the head coach at Akron, Tennessee-Chattanooga, and John Carroll University.
Azzanni has been coaching wide receivers for more than a quarter century, most recently with the New York Jets. Azzanni formerly held the same position with the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears. He succeeds Frisman Jackson, who was released after two seasons with the Steelers. Azzanni leads a group that includes Diontae Johnson and George Pickens.
Kambui served as an offensive line assistant on Smith’s staff with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023.
