It was not surprising that veteran clubhouse and fan favorite Charlie Culberson returned to the Braves on a minor league deal last month, but the fact that Culberson was seeking to become a pitcher after 11MLB seasons as a utility player raised some questions. In an interview with Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Culberson said he began seriously pursuing a pitching career last August while playing for the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate, and he wasn’t completely unfamiliar with the process given his 7 1/3 career innings of mop-up work at the major league level Royals.
Victor Victor Mesa was so highly ranked as an international prospect that the Marlins gave him a $5.25 million bonus in 2018. Despite all of the excitement, Mesa has only hit.233/.289/.289 in 1,211 minor league plate appearances, and The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reports that his time with the Marlins appears to be coming to an end. While there hasn’t been a formal split, the 27-year-old Mesa isn’t expected to attend spring training camp. He was temporarily placed on the restricted list in July after leaving the Triple-A squad before the start of a series in Gwinnett. Victor Mesa Jr. was signed to a $1 million bonus at the same time as his older brother.
