The Boston Celtics did not require another big-time scorer. They did not require another veteran presence. They went out and acquired exactly what they needed: Xavier Tillman.
The Celtics might have done nothing at the NBA trade deadline and yet be the favorites to win the 2024 NBA title. It’s always risky to add another player and perhaps disturb the harmony of a team that has the best record in the NBA this season. There is no concern that Tillman will disrupt the synergy. He’s an ideal fit for what the Celtics require.
Xavier Tillman Is All About Winning a Championship
Tillman is unlikely to make the difference between the Celtics winning a title and going home early, but he can surely play a part. The 6-foot-8 power forward/center who came over from the Memphis Grizzlies understands he’ll be playing behind veterans Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford, but he’s not looking for stats.
He’s in it to win it.
“I have an opportunity now to win a championship,” Tillman told NBC Sports’ Abby Chin. “Looking at the record, we only lost 12 or 13 games (39-12 entering the game against the Washington Wizards on February 9). That is impressive. We had already lost 30 points since leaving the Grizzlies. This is a winning organization that consistently makes the playoffs and makes a deep run.
“My job is to learn the culture as fast as I can and try to help us get over the hump.”
Tillman said he excited to pick Horford’s brain as he embarks on his career with his new team. Horford is in his 16th NBA season and in his second stint with the Celtics.
“I’ll definitely reach out to him,” Tillman said of Horford. “Not only is he an All-Star, but he is also a veteran who has excelled throughout his career. The key thing I want to learn from him is how to become a pro every day, and what it entails, so that I can continue to improve my routines and establish longevity for myself. And secondly, what are the winning strategies he employs to keep his body in good shape during all of these arduous seasons?”
