The Detroit Lions discovered shortly after their NFC Championship Game loss that offensive coordinator Ben Johnson would return in 2024. However, the destiny of All-Pro center Frank Ragnow remained unknown till now.
Ragnow, who will turn 28 in May, dominated this season and was named to his third Pro Bowl and second All-Pro team. Detroit was unsure whether their offensive line leader would return in 2024 after struggling with injuries this season.
Before the NFC Championship, Detroit reported Ragnow’s injuries as bag, knee, ankle, and toe. He was able to play through the pain, but the severity of the issues was far worse than previously reported.
Ragnow, who had suffered a ‘inoperable’ toe injury the previous season, played through considerable pain and discomfort this fall and into the postseason. The injuries he sustained are expected to have long-term ramifications beyond football, which is one of the reasons why the club would be patient in allowing him to decide his future.
Ragnow’s return is as significant to Detroit’s attack as Johnson’s commitment to another season as offensive coordinator. He was probably the greatest center in the NFL last season, and his continued presence on one of the league’s best offensive lines is vital to Detroit’s success.
Detroit, like Johnson, will need to plan for a future without Ragnow. Injuries have already taken their toll on him, and given that retirement was briefly pondered this offseason, it’s realistic to assume he’ll retire before 2026.
