The Detroit Red Wings’ game against the Edmonton Oilers last night took a terrible turn in the third period. The Red Wings pulled off an incredible comeback to tie the game at three goals apiece, but they were outclassed by the Oilers, who led by star player Connor McDavid with six assists as they scored five goals in the last period to win 8–4. It was an unsatisfactory end to a game for coach Derek Lalonde, whose team had shown promise in the first forty minutes.
Responding appropriately to the exasperating meltdown in the third period, Derek Lalonde
Lalonde was particularly disappointed because he had witnessed a lot of improvement from his squad before the pivotal last period against the powerful offensive lineup of the Oilers.
“Extremely annoying,” Lalonde exclaimed afterwards. “We did a lot of good things to get a game like that to 3-3, so to watch it slip away is a little frustrating. It will be a frustrating game to watch.” In the end, there is simply too much simple offence. It’s not a lot, but it’s too easy for an Edmonton club that doesn’t require simple offence.
In the second session, Ezoic Detroit took advantage of multiple high-percentage scoring opportunities, and goals from Joe Veleno and Patrick Kane tied the game at three goals apiece. During this time, they also had a 16-11 advantage in shots against the host Oilers.
According to Lalonde, “It was probably one of our more lopsided periods.” “We had 12-3 opportunities for the Wings.” Regretfully, we were unlucky with a few crossbars and goalposts, and we lose the lead. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t manage the third (period) more skillfully.
Ville Husso doesn’t seem to be available anytime soon.
Husso, however, was pulled off the pitch before the first stanza had halfway through due to yet another lower-body injury. He had battled the same injury before, and he was returning to the rink for the first time since mid-December when this setback happened.
“He injured himself before (Draisaitl) scored, so he was unable to move laterally on the goal,” Lalonde stated. It is regrettable for him, particularly since he has put in a lot of effort and battled to come back to this position. There will be another setback.
Ezoic
The Wings are off on Wednesday, so we’ll know a little more before practice on Thursday, but it feels a lot like his prior injury there.
The Red Wings may look to the trade market to reinforce their goalie duo of Lyon and James Reimer if Husso is sidelined for a lengthy amount of time once more. Less than a month from now, on March 8, the trade deadline approaches, giving Detroit a little window of time to consider possible additions.
In summary: Moving on to Vancouver
The Detroit Red Wings need to move behind their disappointing game from last night as soon as possible and avoid letting any negative feelings get in the way of their play, especially because they have another game against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night.
Husso’s absence means that Lyon or Reimer will get the start in goal at Rogers Arena. The game is slated to begin at 10:00 PM on Bally Sports Detroit. 97.1 The Ticket will provide radio coverage of the event.
