Running back Derrick Henry will undoubtedly be among the biggest fish in the NFL free agency pool in 2024. The majority of people anticipate that Henry will become available, and the Green Bay Packers are one of the teams most likely to be in the running for the big-bodied tailback’s services. Although the Packers still have Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon, Max Dible of Heavy notes that Green Bay could try to modify Jones’ contract and let Dillon go in order to improve the team’s cap situation in order to make room for a possible Henry signing.
By doing this, the Packers would have an older, but still formidable, 1-2 punch in the backfield, especially considering how well Jones performed while healthy at the conclusion of the season and how well Henry played the entire previous season. In the current NFL, when running backs are consistently undervalued, the two may be more than most teams are willing to invest on a pair.
Will The Green Bay Packers Go After Derrick Henry?
Jones turned 29 in December of last year, while Henry just turned 30 in January. That may be advanced running back in time, but there’s no denying those two’s superstar status. Not to mention the developing and maturing quarterback Jordan Love, making them the Green Bay Packers’ 1-2 option on the ground sounds like a nightmare for rival defensive coordinators.
However, given how little time those two running backs have left, it’s one thing to envision Henry and Jones playing together and quite another to plan for Green Bay’s future without them.
