Sal Frelick, an outfielder with the Milwaukee Brewers, is reportedly the San Diego Padres’ top target in trade negotiations.
The following is from “The Athletic’s” Dennis Lin:
Adam Duvall and Michael A. Taylor, who can both play centre field, are among the remaining free agents. League sources claim that Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox and Sal Frelick of the Milwaukee Brewers are two outfielders that have come up in the Padres’ trade talks. Those two players are manageable, still quite young, and perhaps hard to come by.
The Padres were reportedly interested in Duran, but we had never heard of Frelick. Given that the organisation has just two outfielders on its 40-man roster as spring training gets underway, San Diego’s affinity for outfielders makes sense. With the trades of Trent Grisham and Juan Soto this summer, the Padres are lacking in that area.
Regarding Frelick, he joined the Brewers in 2023 and made his main league debut. In 191 at-bats, he knocked three home runs, 24 RBI, and seven stolen bases while hitting.246. With six years remaining in team control and his age of 23, he should be difficult to acquire. It seems improbable that the Brewers, who are usually mindful of their money, would let go of someone like that.
The Padres did not make it to the postseason after placing third in the National League West. They have also lost Blake Snell, Josh Hader, Nick Martinez, and Seth Lugo this summer in addition to Soto and Grisham.
The Brewers, who were first in the National League Central the previous season, had an unusual summer in which they lost Adrian Houser, Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, and manager Craig Counsell. They signed top prospect Jackson Chourio to a long-term contract and added Rhys Hoskins.
