Luis Urias, a former Milwaukee Brewers infielder, joined the Seattle Mariners this offseason via trade. The Boston Red Sox traded him in November 2023, after acquiring him on August 1, 2023, in exchange for Bradley Blalock from Milwaukee.
Upon reporting to the Mariners camp this spring two concerning reports have surfaced regarding Luis Urias. One is about the health of his shoulder and the other is his playing shape. A combination of these two issues, but mainly the shoulder, may result in him starting the 2024 season on the injured list.
According to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, Luis Urias has shoulder irritation and may begin the regular season on the injured list. He is currently confined to modest tossing from 70 feet. He is expected to play third base this season, so he is a long way from being ready to throw 127 feet or more
Urias had a breakout year with the Brewers in 2021, hitting 23 home runs and totaling 75 RBI. In 2022, his output plummeted, and in 2023, he injured his hamstring on opening day. Another disheartening truth is that he struggled in Winter ball this year, hitting only.177/.300/282 in 100 plate appearances.
