Running back Aaron Jones has been mentioned as a potential cap casualty since the end of the Packers’ season, but the team is allegedly working on a deal to keep him.
However, Jones would have to accept a pay decrease as part of this effort. According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers met with Jones’ agent Drew Rosenhaus at the Scouting Combine to discuss a possible contract adjustment.
Jones’ basic salary is set at $11.1 million, with a cap hit of little more than $17 million. The negotiations about a wage decrease are concentrated on reaching a number that works for the Packers while still exceeding Jones’ expectations on the open market.
According to the article, if they are unable to reach a deal, the Packers will cut Jones at the start of the league year. If Jones is cut without a post-June 1 designation, the Packers will save $4.673 million in salary space, but if he is designated, they will save $11.3 million.
