The Green Bay Packers did not enjoy a great start to the 2023 NFL season. Following a shocking Week One victory over the Chicago Bears, Jordan Love and the offense began a long process of development and chemistry building. In Week Two, they blew a fourth-quarter lead to the Atlanta Falcons, and in Week Three, they needed an 18-point fourth quarter to win by one. However, those two games were followed by a devastating four-game losing streak.
When the Packers were 2-5, many had given up on the team and were ready to move on from Love. However, the club won seven of their last ten games, securing the final NFC playoff slot and defeating the Cowboys.
One of the Packers’ starters, who appeared in 15 games this season, is not anticipated to return.
The Green Bay Packers’ long-running partnership at running back is poised to alter. According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers are unlikely to re-sign running back A.J. Dillon, whose rookie contract is about to expire.
Dillon has played 60 games for the Packers over the last four seasons, starting 11 of them. In addition to rushing 597 times for 2,428 yards and 16 touchdowns, he grabbed 86 receptions for 763 yards and two scores.
The Packers will most likely use the draft to fix the running back problem this year. However, free agency and even the trade market are not off the table. Last year, the Packers expressed a strong interest in trading for Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor.
Aaron Jones future is in question as well, however, given his age (29) the Packers will likely move on from him in the next few years (if not this off-season). The Packers will need to think long-term at the position sooner rather than later.
