Despite chronic leg difficulties caused by a stress response dating back to 2023, Cincinnati Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo hopes to reach the opening day roster.
Nick Lodolo’s availability for Opening Day is uncertain as he continues to suffer from discomfort caused by a stress response in his tibia dating back to 2023.
According to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com:
Today, Nick Lodolo will be throwing a side bullpen session. He is scheduled to see a specialist tomorrow for tests on his left tibula. The outcome will most likely determine whether he can be ready for the Reds’ season opener or shortly thereafter.
It’s certainly an interesting situation as Lodolo both continues to pitch and experience discomfort.
The former top prospect made only seven appearances in 2023 before the leg injury ended his season. One of the best young arms in the sport, the 26-year-old is a lifetime 6-8 over parts of two seasons. He is supposed to pair with Hunter Greene to make up a young nucleus of the organization’s starting rotation, but both players haven’t been able to stay healthy yet in their careers.
If Lodolo is ready for Opening Day, he will likely join a rotation that includes Greene, Frankie Montas, and Graham Ashcraft. If he is unable to recover in time, the team can turn to Nick Martinez, Brandon Williamson, and other pitchers.
Cincinnati went 82-80 last season and finished third in the National League Central. Because of the division’s relative mediocrity and their impressive collection of youthful talent, the Reds will be a popular bet to make the playoffs in 2024.
