As Opening Day approaches, Cincinnati Reds legend Joey Votto still hasn’t found his next team in free agency. But that doesn’t mean teams haven’t considered signing Votto.
The first baseman hopes to return for his 18th MLB season. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels are two potential teams that could honor Votto’s demand.
Votto’s 2023 season was plagued by a shoulder injury, which limited him to 65 games. When he was healthy, he hit.202 with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs. It did not tell the full tale of Votto’s career in Cincinnati, where he hit in 2,056 games.294, with 356 home runs and 1,144 RBI. Votto was a six-time All-Star, a Gold Glove winner, and the 2020 National League MVP.
At this point in his career, Votto does not appear to be an everyday first baseman. Nonetheless, he remains a valuable bat as designated hitter. His league experience would benefit any clubhouse. Votto, who wants to return, is looking for a ring and might help ignite a squad with similar championship dreams.
On paper, the Blue Jays have a better chance of making the World Series than the Angels. Shohei Ohtani was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers this summer. However, both teams want to contend and could use a left-handed bat off the bench.
Joey Votto will be remembered for his remarkable career with the Reds. However, as he seeks to advance his career, he might join the Blue Jays or Angels as his second MLB team.
