Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight, the Detroit Lions’ depth running backs, were retained heading into free agency.
According to ESPN, the Lions tendered Reynolds, an exclusive-rights free agent, which is unsurprising. However, this move reduces the potential need in the backfield for a squad that boasts one of the most wanted one-two punches.
Reynolds has taken advantage of his opportunity after signing with the Lions before of the 2021 season. After generating some commotion in his early appearances, he gained recognition as one of the featured players on HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” with former Lions running back Duce Staley’s “Netflix” nickname for Reynolds catching on.
The former Kutztown standout ran 41 times for 179 yards and one touchdown last season. He was the RB3 behind Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery for most of the season, especially after Knight’s injury. Reynolds didn’t touch the ball much last year. But he still made some memorable plays, including a massive touchdown-springing block and a postseason touchdown run.
Last season, Gibbs and Montgomery established a potent backfield combo. And, while the Lions may search for a young running back to compete in camp, it’s easy to imagine them being pleased with this group of backs.
