The New York Yankees made numerous important changes to restructure the squad following a poor 82-80 season in 2023. Despite Cashman’s moves, the Bombers’ infield depth feels a little low right now. Should they file a waiver claim for San Francisco Giants third baseman J.D. Davis to gain some help?
Scott Rogust of FanSided identified the Yankees as one of three teams that “should take an easy flier” on Davis. The right-handed hitter started spring training as the Giants’ starting third baseman. That changed recently, when San Francisco acquired four-time Gold Glove winner Matt Chapman. He was also placed on waivers over the weekend, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray, on March 9.
“Bringing in Davis would immediately fill a need as the primary backup at both third base and shortstop,” Rogust said in a statement. “This is a Yankees team that has let it be known that they have to win this upcoming season, and have a World Series win as their goal in 2024.”
This season, Oswald Peraza was projected to serve as the primary backup to Anthony Volpe at shortstop and DJ LeMahieu at third base. Unfortunately for New York, he’ll begin 2024 on the injured list with a shoulder strain, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. Peraza will be sidelined for at least two months due to this ailment.
