Could this be the year the Georgia Bulldogs see their first 1,000-yard rusher since 2019? For several decades, the Georgia Bulldogs have been associated with excellent running backs, a strong running game, and exceptionally gifted running backs. However, while the quality in the running back room has not diminished, the Bulldogs have gone nearly five seasons without a 1,000-yard rusher.
D’andre Swift, who ran for 1,218 yards in 2019, was the most recent running back to surpass 1,000 yards. Since then, a few running backs have gotten close, but none have been able to surpass the record. While this tendency may scare some, it is for good reason. The Bulldogs’ passing offense has improved dramatically because to highly talented ball catchers like Ladd McConkey and Brock Bowers. In addition, the Dawgs have started running “by committee,” which means many backs split carries throughout the game.
However, 2024 may bring fresh opportunities for the Georgia offense, as the running back room has lately been bolstered with new talent. The Bulldogs’ roster has also undergone major changes, with some excellent receivers leaving for the NFL. This roster makeover may lead the Bulldogs’ offensive strategy to shift slightly. The Bulldogs’ 2024 roster is loaded with skill, which allows Kirby Smart and his staff to potentially revamp their offensive strategy. While it is unknown whether this will result in a 1,000-yard rusher, the squad does have the potential to create one.

For the past few decades, the Georgia Bulldogs have become synonymous with great running backs a strong running game, and extremely talented running backs. (Photo by Tony Walsh) The last running back to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark was D’andre Swift, who rushed for 1,218 yards during the 2019 season. Since then, a handful of running backs have come close, but none have been able to reach the mark. While this trend may be alarming to some, it has come with good reason. The Bulldogs passing game has seen a dramatic increase with extremely talented pass catches such as Ladd McConkey and Brock Bowers. In addition, the Dawgs have begun running “by committee” where multiple backs share carries throughout the game. But 2024 may provide new opportunities for the Georgia offense as the running back room has recently been inflated with new talent. The Bulldogs roster has also gone through some changes as numerous talented receivers have departed for the NFL. This roster overhaul has the potential to cause the Bulldogs to make a slight change in their offensive philosophy. The Bulldogs 2024 roster is chalked full of talent which provides Kirby Smart and staff to possibly update their their offensive philosophy. While it is unclear whether or not that will result in the team having a 1,000-yard rusher, the team certainly has the ability to produce one.
