The Detroit Lions and Pro Bowl guard Kevin Zeitler have reached an agreement on a one-year contract, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The individual spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the arrangement had not yet been revealed.
With the acquisition, Detroit filled its last glaring offensive need, replacing Jonah Jackson. The veteran guard signed with the Los Angeles Rams in free agency last week, after the team’s decision to bring back versatile offensive lineman Graham Glasgow.
Last season, in his third year as a starter with the Baltimore Ravens, Zeitler, 34, made his first Pro Bowl appearance. He was picked out of Wisconsin by Cincinnati with the 27th overall pick in 2012, and he was regarded as one of the league’s top rookies at the time.
Zeitler has started 181 games in his 12-year career, including five with the Bengals, two with Cleveland, two with the New York Giants, and the last two with the Ravens.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes has made a number of free-agent moves on both sides of the ball, hoping to strengthen a squad that won two playoff games in a single postseason for the first time since 1957.
Holmes, whose contract was extended recently, signed defensive tackle DJ Reader to a two-year deal worth up to $27.5 million to fill one of the biggest voids.
