Police in Florida are still looking for former Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton, who has a felony warrant out for his arrest on a domestic abuse charge.
However, a high-ranking Lions official acknowledged this week that when the warrant was first issued, the team knew exactly where Sutton was – inside the team’s facilities.
On March 25, team president Rod Wood told Fox 2 Sports that Sutton was “actually in our building” and working with the strength coach when they discovered he was wanted in Florida. The organization sent a message to the veteran cornerback, advising him to surrender to authorities, but he remained at large.
Lions President: ‘He Left the Building’
Wood added that Sutton paid an unscheduled offseason visit to the club facilities earlier this month, and while there, they discovered that he had a warrant out for his arrest.
“We learned about the warrant the same time everybody else did, on social media,” Wood was quoted as saying by Fox 2. “And we were able to communicate with Cam because he was present in our building. And we discovered him, down with our strength team. He arrived up suddenly to work out. We were able to speak with him in person—not me, but other members of the team. And he left the building; we released him the next day, and no one has spoken with him since.”
Wood added that Lions management communicated with the NFL and huddled to determine the best course of action, eventually reaching out to Sutton and asking him to hire a lawyer and turn himself in to police.
