The Blue Jays will start the season without two of their finest relievers, as Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson are anticipated to be on the injured list.
The high-leverage arms simply ran out of time while recovering from right-arm difficulties. Romano hasn’t pitched since March 10 due to elbow discomfort, and Swanson has been sidelined since March 13 due to forearm stiffness.
Jays manager John Schneider did not go so far as to officially announce roster changes, but he did accept that relievers will have to return to game action. That would necessitate a bullpen session followed by live batting practice with hitters.
Romano and Swanson aren’t expected to throw off a mound until some time “next week.” The Jays have until 12 p.m. ET on Thursday to announce their 26-man roster, which is approximately four hours before they open the regular season with a game against the Rays.
