ex Verdugo leads the Yankees to an 8-1 victory.

Verdugo dominated on his first visit to Fenway Park for a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox after being traded to the Yankees this offseason.
He had a fire inside of him, as evidenced by his brilliant home run trot during a two-run explosion in the opening inning. Putting the Yankees ahead 2-0 in the first inning, New York never looked back.

Yankees vs. Red Sox highlights and takeaways
Dugie’s significant evening
Verdugo was a true dawg, playing right field for the first time this season and hitting from the fourth slot. With three hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning, he led the way. His incredible night was rounded off with an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning. He also added an RBI double in the fourth inning.
After the game, Verdugo said he had this series marked on his calendar and thought he performed admirably for the Yankees.
One more excellent beginning Luis Gil
Although Gil’s performance may not have been as dominant as it has been during his first season, it was still sufficient to keep the Red Sox at bay. Gil pitched 5.0 innings, giving up four hits, four walks, and one run while striking out six.
The 26-year-old altered his strategy slightly but still managed to produce 13 swings and misses. Gil’s fastball and changeup combo accounted for 97 of his 104 pitches; he used them exclusively. In his five innings, he threw just seven sliders.
Is Anthony Rizzo discovering his calling?
Rizzo might be getting back into his rhythm after taking a couple of days off earlier in the week to clear his head. For the first time since May 31, the left first baseman recorded two hits on Friday, driving in a run and adding a walk to his stat line.
Rizzo needs to keep having good games as the trade deadline draws near in order to convince the front office that they don’t need to upgrade at first base.
