The longer contract negotiations take between the Miami Dolphins and star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the more doubt there is surrounding his future with the team. New information has emerged regarding this current holdout, and it isn’t exactly great news for Dolphins supporters who want to keep Tua in Miami for the long haul.
Miami Dolphins News: New Details on Tua Tagovailoa Contract Talks
According to league insider Jeff Darlington of ESPN, the Dolphins have refused to table an offer that is at par with recent contracts signed by the likes of Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence:
“You’ve got a situation because right now, the Dolphins are not offering the contract that is the market value based on those other deals,” Darlington said (h/t Andrew Gould of The Spun).
“… We’re not to panic-point just yet. I just think that my optimism earlier has to be slightly scaled back.”
“You’ve got a situation because right now the Dolphins are not offering the contract that is the market value.”
That can’t be good. As Darlington said, there’s no real cause for concern right now — at least not yet. However, the fact that the Dolphins are holding out on giving Tagovailoa a new deal that is at “market value.”
For what it’s worth, Goff signed a $134 million extension for four years with the Detroit Lions, while Trevor Lawrence put pen to paper on a record-breaking $275 million, five-year extension. There’s a significant margin between those two deals, and perhaps Tua is hoping for a new contract that’s somewhere in between.
