The NBA buyout market for 2024 is already moving swiftly. Your Los Angeles Lakers signed free agent LA native point guard Spencer Dinwiddie to a $1.5 million rest-of-year contract earlier today, while top available veteran assets like center Bismack Biyombo are already off the market. However, the biggest player on the buyout market, six-time All-Star, one-time champion, and likely future Hall of Famer Kyle Lowry, is now also spoken for.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Lowry has secured a buyout of his current deal with the Charlotte Hornets and plans to play for his hometown Philadelphia 76ers. Essentially, by signing Dinwiddie, Los Angeles preferred the 6’5″ Colorado product over the 37-year-old Lowry, who has been past his prime since joining the Miami Heat. Will the Purple and Gold live to regret their decision? Simply put: no. By the end of his Heat stint, Lowry had been demoted to the bench.
role, and was at times borderline unplayable, even for a club needing for assistance at the moment. Although Dinwiddie, 30, is having a down year, he started all 48 games for the Brooklyn Nets before being traded to the Toronto Raptors and then released. His three-point shooting percentage has dropped to just 32% on 5.8 attempts. If that returns to its Dallas Mavericks-era efficacy (40.4% and 40.5%), he will be a lethal contributor off the bench, backing up D’Angelo Russell.
