Even after selecting Kenny Pickett in the first round just two years prior, the Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t entirely convinced that Pickett will be their franchise quarterback. For Mike Tomlin’s squad the previous season, three different men started as quarterback. The Steelers made it to the postseason somehow, but nobody really thought of them as real Super Bowl contenders.
The team obviously wants that to be changed in the upcoming offseason. The offence has already undergone one significant change with the appointment of Arthur Smith, the former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, as the new offensive coordinator. There are now those who think Smith might get back together with a former quarterback from his time as the playcaller with the Titans.
Ryan Tannehill could join Pittsburgh Steelers’ QB competition
The Pittsburgh Steelers are anticipated to look at signing Ryan Tannehill this offseason, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Having started for his team in ten of his eleven NFL seasons, Tannehill is set to enter free agency following five seasons with Tennessee, a team that appears ready to proceed with Will Levis at quarterback.
Tannehill, meanwhile, seems like a solid fit in Pittsburgh, especially considering that he spent two seasons (2019–2020) as an offensive coordinator with the new Steelers, Arthur Smith. It’s reasonable to argue that Tannehill’s career peaked during those two years, and he even earned a Pro Bowl as a result.
Even though Tannehill will reach 36 before the 2024 season begins, at the very least, he may offer insightful criticism to Pickett, who turns 26 in June. If not, it’s not a bad backup plan to have a guy with 151 starts during the regular season and an additional five during the playoffs.
