Only a few months after the Queensland government followed their recommendation and turned down the construction of a $3.4 billion stadium to serve as the Games’ centrepiece, Olympic power broker John Coates and the Australian Olympic Committee have subtly increased their influence over Brisbane 2032. Following the Games in Paris, Coates, the departing vice president of the International Olympic Committee and a long-time head of the Australian Olympic Committee, has stated he will concentrate on organising Australia’s third Olympic Games.
