This week’s SB Nation Reacts question asked which Atlanta Braves’ pitcher was most deserving of an All-Star nod. Veteran left-hander Chris Sale won going away capturing 56% of the vote. Fellow new addition, Reynaldo López finished second with 38% while Max Fried came in a distant third. There is a good chance that Sale and Lopez are both selected if they continue to pitch well. I think Fried has the opportunity to pitch himself into the mix as well and I’m a little shocked that he received such a tiny share of the vote. Throw out the two bad starts to…

Within a few months, we’ve gone from “Should Reynaldo López be a starting pitcher?” to “Should Reynaldo López be the National League’s starter in this year’s All-Star Game?” You can argue that the Phillies’ Ranger Suárez or López’s Braves teammate Chris Sale are more deserving of this honor. Suárez has constructed his own sub-2.00 ERA (1.75) while throwing 18 more innings than López. Strikeout and walk rates help Sale and the Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow to have better WAR and expected stats than López.

Somewhat shockingly, Atlanta’s rotation hasn’t missed a beat without Strider, thanks to a couple of outstanding offseason additions. Chris Sale seems to have found his old self in Atlanta, pitching like an All-Star again that could challenge for the NL Cy Young award. But if Sale is to win his first Cy Young, he’s going to have to beat out his teammate, Reynaldo Lopez. The MLB’s ERA leader through 13 starts has been the most impactful free agent signing in the league this season, and it’s really saved the Braves, who never could have expected this kind of output from Lopez after transitioning to a starter…

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Jim Leyland, unhappy with ownership-ordered trades and salary slashing, said Tuesday he will resign at the end of the season to pursue a job with a contending team. Leyland, a two-time National League manager of the year, said Aug.29 he planned to honor his $1 million-a-year contract that runs through the 2000 season. But he changed his mind after realizing the Pirates may not contend again for years. “It wasn’t a tough decision, but it was a sad decision,” said Leyland, who rebuilt a 98-loss team in 1986 into a three-time division champion only to see the…
